Tools to Cut Through the Quantitative Section of the GRE

Many topics but a few key strategies Probably the biggest challenge that students face when approaching the quantitative section on the GRE is the sheer range of topics, which cover numerous concepts up through early high school math. The upside is that not a single one of these topics is particularly complicated, and the way they are tested has more to do with reading carefully, using clues and cues embedded in the question and answer choices strategically, and pacing yourself according to your target score - slower for medium score and faster for high scores. The topics themselves cover concepts in algebra, geometry (properties of shapes, formulas for calculating size), data analysis (chart and graph interpretation, statistics and probability), and number properties, (which is about having a deeper conceptual understanding of topics such as factoring, divisibility, exponents and roots, and positive and negative numbers). Some topics feel easier than others Most students I’ve worked with are particularly rusty on exponent rules, some of the geometry concepts, probability, and combined rate problems simply because these topics don’t come up in most lines of work. For key formulas and relationships, I suggest that students begin by creating flashcards and then reinforce by working out concrete examples of each formula. An example of this might be calculating the value of [(2^3)^2] / (2^4) to reinforce the power and quotient exponent rules. Rather than immediately simplifying this to be (8^2)/16 = 4, I’d recommend that the student write it as: (2*2*2)(2*2*2) = (2*2*2)(2*2*2) = 2*2 = 4. (2*2*2*2) (2*2*2*2) Reinforcing the intuitive logic of formulas and rules will help you to remember them, even when there are several dozen of them. (If you’re rusty on these exponent rules, just google them, and you’ll find lots of visually appealing layouts of these foundational rules.) A few key strategies The most important global strategies include some that apply to any standardized test, such as knowing when to backsolve from the answer choices, pick your own numbers, or simplify algebraically, and some specific to the GRE, such as making the two terms in Quantitative Comparison problems resemble each other, skimming the Data Interpretation charts and figures without getting bogged down in the details, and flagging the most complex problems, such as â€Å"select all that apply,† to review at the end of the section rather than burning through extra minutes up front. Getting a mid-range score, between the 40th and 60th percentiles, in the low 150s on each section, requires fluency with most of the math concepts and the skill of applying this knowledge accurately. Getting an upper range-score, at or above the 80th percentile, or 160 on each section, requires being able to engage in more complex inferences beyond application of basic knowledge. Here are examples of each. The difference between â€Å"medium† and â€Å"hard† questions A mid-level quantitative comparison problem tells us that (x^2)y 0, and x(y^2) 0, and then it asks us whether x or y is larger. This problem requires us to understand how different kinds of multiplication result in positive versus negative numbers and infer from there: Squares are always positive, a positive times a positive is positive, and a positive times a negative is always negative. Since (x^2)y 0, y must also be positive. Since x(y^2) 0, x must be negative. We can conclude that xy, so the answer is B. An upper-level quantitative comparison problem asks us to go just one step further. It tells us that the variable x is any integer greater than 1 and then asks us to compare the relative sizes of 3^(x+1) and 4^x. The former term has a smaller base but a bigger exponent. To solve this, there’s not a simple formula or rule that determines the answer. Instead, we need to consider at least a couple different values for x. When picking numbers, we always want to consider both small and large values, and if the problem permits, we want to consider whole numbers and fractions, as well as positive and negative numbers. This problem specified that x may only be positive integers greater than two, so picking x = 2 and 10 should be enough. If we set x equal to the minimum value of 2, the first term is 3^3 = 27, which is larger than 4^2 = 16. If we make x larger, we can use the onscreen calculator to find that 3^11 = 177,147, which is much smaller than 4^10 = 1,048,576. However, the company faced challenges in credibility of the information, financial support in ICT tools, and availability of appropriate resources, growth rate and change of directorship. However, from this issue I have been able to analyze the fact that the change in ICT tools with the change in the organizational cultures and organizational growth is important for a company to avoid challenges and survive successfully. Moreover, the issue has taught me to be open-minded and has taught me the lesson that every aspect of the organizational problem will not be solved. Moreover, the discussion within the issue helped me to understand the use of Golden circle. The Golden circle suggests that the professionals within the organization should have the answers to three basic questions namely what they do, how they do and why they do (Leung, 2011). Hence, as an ICT professional the understanding of the basic norms within the organization will help me to be a productive employee of the organization. However, the success of the organization can be ascertained by the increased reputation, maturity and financial security of the organization. The issues and the adoption of the different techniques will help me in generating professional skills as a successful ICT professional. Issue 2: Using mobile devices in workforce The use of mobile devices in workforce has helped the organizations in improving the customer service; maintain an easy access of the historical records, guarantees that activities are performed on schedule and eliminate any problems in respect of data entry and data storage. This presentation has helped me to realize the importance and benefits of the ICT tools by displaying the benefits of the mobile devices. Use of paper-based systems before the invention of the technology gave rise to various problems namely high possibility of human error, double entry of data, non-maintenance of standard answers, project-scheduling issues, limited reporting and high labor-intensive procedures. Hence, this lecture was effective in creation of awareness of the benefits of ICT tools within the organizations. I was personally able to recognize the features like barcode scanners, telephone functions, wireless internet browsing, came, speech to text capabilities and mobile printing will help the orga nizations and the professionals to make the work easier and productive (Arnold and Boggs, 2011). The displaying of the benefits of Mobile devices in the workplace also helped the audience to acquire practical knowledge and experience form the lecture. Moreover, the lecture provoked the audience to avail the use of the ICT technologies effectively in order to reduce human labor. The lecture focused on the young ICT professionals and helped them to take ICT tools like mobile device as an important and supportive tool for the effective management f the organizational services. The lecture also focused on the digital computerized field service management system so that the young ICT professionals would be well knowledge about the ICT technology process. Issue 3: Professional issues in IT- stakeholder engagement This lecture deals with the assessment of the professional issues in the stakeholder engagement for five different companies namely the National domestic Airline, Oracle, government departments, government portal and online supermarket shopping companies. The lecture focuses on the stakeholder engagement strategy of each company separately. From the discussion on the stakeholder engagement strategy of National domestic airline, I can conclude that to make an effective stakeholder engagement the company adopts the involvement of the all team members. Again, stakeholder engagement in Oracle is done with the development of appropriate communication skills. The lecture helps me to realize the value of listening skills in respect of improving the stakeholder engagement. The government department of Australia and New Zealand uses the stakeholder mapping as a process of identifying the people or organizations that may have an important impact on the project. However, my.gov.au adopts a diff erent aspect of stakeholder engagement. The stakeholder engagement system can make the organization beneficial in respect of meeting the required objectives. It can also enable the stakeholders to communicate keeping in mind the cultural sensibilities and interactions. The online shopping companies focus on the use of the software and IT applications on the stakeholder engagement. This lecture has helped me to understand the usefulness of IT in delivering and acquiring systems. The online shopping companies are focused on using the ICT tools for the management of the customer reviews and referrals so that their product can be serviced effectively. Issue 4: ICT in a developing country This lecture focuses on the use of ICT in developing countries. The focus of this lecture is on the use of ICT tools by the NGO named World Vision. The lecture at the beginning gives details about the NGO, which is a Faith based Organization operating in 97 countries with around 44,000 employees and a global income ranging of around 2.6 billion USD. The NGO woks for activities like providing relief, development of underprivileged communities, advocacy of social issues and work against trafficking issues From the lecture, I have been able to get an insight on the implications of global ICT on the activities of the NGO. The NGO has developed a global network with a connectivity of 6 Gb bandwidth however the company has no private global network. From the lecture, it is clear to the audience that the ICT tool helps the NGOs to develop education, communication and business opportunity (Arnold and Boggs, 2011). The lecture shows that ICT is an essential and significant part of the infrastructure of the companies in a developing economy. Many developing countries are focusing on new economy and supporting global demand for ICT. Thus, the lecture has made me realize that it is important to develop effective ICT skills so that I can work as a successful ICT professional in the developing as well as developed countries. The leadership style also consists of many types of styles that are Employee oriented leadership style in which the managers gives respect and regards to his or her subordinates and also gives them the power of decision making. Second is Production oriented style in the manager make rules and regulations to control work and the third one is change oriented style in which the manager offers different ways of doing things (McColl- Kennedy and Anderson, 2002). In managerial decision style it is the most imp ortant element in marketing. In this people are guided by various functions like sensing, intuition, thinking and feeling. In Motivation profile it is the desire to work in effective manner and also to maintain good relation with others. It is based on the motivation of leader. The motivation level remains same for both men and womens. If both men and women are motivated they will work in effective manner. In the article quantitative method is used which is sample and data collection in this it reduces the effects of leadership behavior and also no difference is seen the motivation profile but in leadership and decision making style the difference is analyzed (Camilleri, 2006). In this the focus is also given on the similarities which are taken into consideration. The similarities are discussed by taking into two theories that are the public and private distinction and also the theories of person organization fit. It is also seen that there are more employed women in schools as comp ared to men and also they are on the position of leader. There are more women employed then men on the position of manager. Womens are leading many organizations nowadays and there is very little area where men are leading women in insurance sector.
